Dental Bridges For Missing Teeth
For patients who are missing one or more teeth, a dental bridge is an effective option. A dental bridge is a structure containing a false tooth that is bound by two dental crowns and attached to the surrounding healthy teeth on each side. The false tooth bridges the gap caused by the missing tooth. There are several dental bridges options for patients including metal bridges or zirconia bridges.
Types Of Dental Bridges
There are several different materials used in dentistry to fabricate dental bridges. Two of the most commonly used materials used for dental bridges include:
TRADITIONAL TITANIUM DENTAL BRIDGES
Traditional titanium dental bridges are the most popularly used dental bridges for replacing missing teeth that are surrounded by healthy, natural teeth on each side of the gap. A traditional titanium dental bridge consists of a false tooth or teeth that are supported by dental crowns that are cemented onto each of the abutment teeth.
The use of titanium allows for a comfortable and secure fit due to its lightness and softness. Its biocompatibility also prevents the risk of metal allergic reactions or sensitivities.
CERAMIC ZIRCONIA BRIDGES (METAL-FREE)
Zirconia bridges are a holistic approach to replacing missing teeth. They are made of Zirconium oxide, an extremely durable dental ceramic that causes no irritation or reaction to the gums and mouth. In addition to their strength, Zirconia bridges have a translucent appearance and look identical to the surrounding natural teeth making it an aesthetically pleasing restoration.
Unlike porcelain and acrylic dental materials, Zirconia has a smooth and polished surface that will feel comfortable against your gums and resist staining. Any other dental material currently unmatches these features.
ALL-ON-FOUR FOR DENTURE REPLACEMENT (FULL OR PARTIAL)
All-On-Four is our most affordable solution for patients who want to replace their dentures with fixed teeth. For many denture-wearing patients, implants were an impossibility due to their high cost. Now, with the All-On-Four fixed bridge technique, patients are able to get out of their uncomfortable denture, and once again have a beautiful set of teeth!
The end result is a solid base for your new teeth to attach to, never having to be removed. The procedure saves time and money, all with minimal discomfort. The All-On-Four procedure is virtually painless and does not usually require any bone grafting.
ALL-ON-FOUR FOR POOR OR HOPELESS TEETH LOST TO PERIODONTAL DISEASE
Periodontal disease is one of the main causes of teeth and bone loss. The severe gum infection causes the gums to become inflamed and eventually form large pockets where plaque bacteria manifest. The plaque that grows below the gumline affects the supporting tissue and begins to deteriorate, causing teeth to become loose and eventually fall out or have to be extracted.
In the past, between 6 – 10 implants were needed to supply enough strength for a fixed implant bridge for full-arch restoration. New technology has found that if the end implants are placed at certain angles, their strength is drastically increased. This also allows us to utilize the existing bone, without having to complete bone grafting prior to the All-On-Four procedure to strengthen the bone density. Because of this, we are able to anchor a fixed bridge with as few as 4 or 6 implants (far fewer than normally used). Placing fewer implants also saves the patient thousands of dollars. The implants, as well as your new teeth, will be placed in the same visit. This will allow you to leave the office with beautiful new teeth on the very same day!
Zirconia bridges do not have many disadvantages; however, there is an increased cost in using zirconia implants due to the material used. Speak with your doctor to discuss what treatment options are right for you.
